How to get your home ready for a spring sale
While winter seems to just be getting started and the brighter skies and longer days seem a long way off, spring is really just around the corner. And thankfully, it will be here before we know it. If you are thinking about selling your home in 2021, now is the time to start getting yours ready! By completing these steps during the winter, you will be ahead of the game and a lot less stressed when the robins return.
Step one – find and meet with your real estate agent
Your agent is a great resource. They can help you determine what you need to do in order to get your home ready to go on the market. Also, finding the right agent is important, so starting now will save you lots of time and stress later!
Step two – get organized and declutter
Try to get every room in your home organized. Get your tubs for giveaway, for trash, and for storage ready to go. Organize and declutter one room a week and sort through all your stuff. Find proper homes for things and give unused items away. Move a third of your wanted items (furniture, tables, knick-knacks) to a storage area. When you get ready to show the home, it will be ready, and interested buyers will be able to imagine themselves in your home.
Step three – fix it
All those little things that you have been meaning to fix, like the hole in the drywall or the leaky faucet that keeps dripping all day, should go on a “to do” list! Also, create a list of tools and supplies you need in order to complete the projects. Purchase all the items at once so you don’t have to make a ton of trips to the store. Then, if you can, try to accomplish one task a week!
Step four – clean it
Deep cleaning will be necessary if you want to sell your home, so why not get started. Try to deep clean one area a week. Clean the baseboards, the walls, the windowsills and inside cabinets. When it comes time to clean for a showing, you will be ahead of the game!
Step five – paint it
Painting will make your home much more inviting and save you time later. Choose neutrals that are pleasing to the majority of people. Get rid of accent walls and make it warm and inviting, or if your home is modern, make it cool and crisp! If you aren’t sure what colors are most popular, contact your real estate agent for advice.
Step six – jazz it up
If your bathroom is like mine, it could use a makeover. Buying a new shower curtain, rugs, towels, and accessories are a great, low-cost investment to make your bathroom more appealing to buyers. You also get to enjoy it in the meantime, and you can take them with you when you move. It might also be a wise investment to switch out the rugs in your kitchen and buy a new rug for the front entryway and/or front porch to welcome people into your home.
If you are thinking about selling your home this spring, it is a good idea to spring into action now. You will save yourself a lot of stress by tackling some of the tasks now! And, if you need any advice on what to do and what not to do, contact me, I am happy to help!
